SCITUATE − If you’ve ever taken a drive along Turner Road in the Sand Hills neighborhood or spent a summer day on Peggotty Beach, you might recognize some familiar scenes in an Oscar-nominated movie in theaters now.
Scituate served as one of the filming locations for "American Fiction," which was written and directed by Cord Jefferson. The movie is based on the 2001 novel “Erasure” by Percival Everett.
In "American Fiction," struggling novelist Thelonious “Monk” Ellison feels resentment and frustration that the literary world only validates “Black” stories that rely on tropes and stereotypes about Black people. To confirm his theory, Monk uses a pen name to write his own version called “My Pafology.” After the book becomes an instant hit, he must grapple with his conflicted feelings.

The movie stars Jeffrey Wright, who played Jim Gordon in "The Batman" and Bernard Lowe in the HBO series "Westworld," as well as Tracee Ellis Ross, Issa Rae and Sterling K. Brown.
When this part of the South Shore was crawling with film crews and equipment during filming in August and September 2022, the movie was only known as “Untitled Novelist Project.” Scenes were also filmed in Boston, Brighton, Brookline, Cambridge and Newton, according to the Massachusetts Film Office.
"American Fiction" was released in December and is still in select theaters. The movie will be screened at the Reel Harbor Theater in Scituate on Feb. 8, 10 and 11. A panel discussion following Friday’s showing is sold out.
The film has won several awards, including a People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival. "American Fiction" has been nominated for Academy Awards for best picture, best actor (Wright), best supporting actor (Brown), best adapted screenplay (Jefferson) and best original score (Laura Karpman).
The 96th Academy Awards ceremony will take place March 10 at 7 p.m.
