United States Rep. Mike Rogers had to be restrained as he angrily confronted Matt Gaetz as turmoil hit the House floor on Friday night during the Speaker vote. The Alabama Congressman was reportedly stopped from lunging at Gaetz.

The Alabama Congressman was reportedly stopped from lunging at Gaetz. Rogers jumped towards Gaetz shortly after the Florida lawmaker declared “present” during the 14th round of voting for the next Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Florida Congressman’s decision, in part, left Rep. Kevin McCarthy short of one vote from being elected as the Speaker during Friday’s round of voting. As Alabama Congressman, jumped towards Gaetz, Rep. Richard Hudson had to grab Rogers. The incident was confirmed by the images taken in the chambers.

Hudson had to hold Rogers by his shoulders and even put one hand over Alabama Congressman’s mouth as he tried to scold Gaetz. In the images from the house chambers, Rogers points towards Gaetz in frustration. However, the tension eventually wavered in the 15th round of speaker votes as Kevin McCarthy was elected, which also ended a lengthy contest that started on Tuesday. Rogers grew furious over Gaetz right after the Florida Congressman and McCarthy spoke as Gaetz had withheld support for the latter’s bid. It is pertinent to mention that Rogers was one of the top backers of McCarthy’s bid to become the Speaker.

In the 15th round of vote, McCarthy was elected as the speaker after receiving 216 votes to 212 for Hakeem Jeffries. Six had voted “present” in the round including Gaetz. FAQs:
