Metro Vancouver weather: Rainfall warning issued, flash floods ...

Environment Canada has issued a rainfall warning for Metro Vancouver and flash floods are possible.

The national weather forecaster says rain, at times heavy, is expected across Metro Vancouver on Friday, Aug. 23, with amounts up to 50 mm falling overnight. 

A low-pressure system off the Oregon Coast will track inland across Southern B.C., producing heavy rain in the early evening and overnight. The rain is expected to ease on Saturday. 

Heavy rainfall can "cause flash floods and water pooling on roads" and localized flooding is possible in low-lying areas. People should watch for washouts near rivers, creeks, and culverts.

Winds gusting up to 20 km/h are also possible with the heavy rain.

Environment Canada Meteorologist Ken Dosanjh told V.I.A. in an interview on Thursday that Vancouver International Airport (YVR) typically receives 36.1 mm of rain in August, meaning the region could see an average month's rain in mere hours. 

"So far YVR has seen 12 mm of rain this month, which is only 22 per cent of the average," he said.

Dosanjh said the current system is more similar to autumn storms, describing it as "fall-esque" because it carries widespread rain over a long period.
