Environment Canada on Thursday issued a rainfall warning for the Montreal area, predicting up to 100 millimetres of precipitation to fall on the region on Friday.

The federal agency anticipates that rain will fall over a 24-hour period in Quebec and onto a front extending from the United States border to north of the Lac Saint-Jean region.

The heaviest rainfall is expected to occur Friday evening and continue overnight to Saturday and there is a risk of flooding in low lying areas. Rainfall warnings issued for southern Quebec and parts of Ontario also warn of flash floods and water pooling on highways.

“This rain is caused by a low pressure system interacting with the moisture associated with tropical storm Debby,” Environment Canada said.

Debby, which remains a tropical storm, made landfall for a second time early Thursday in Bull’s Bay, South Carolina. It is expected to head inland, spreading heavy rain and possible floods as it does so.

Debby first made landfall as a category 1 hurricane in Florida on Monday.
