A notice was posted on the wholesale retailer’s website on Sept. 23 explaining that affected Kirkland Signature Probiotic Yogurt may contain a type of yeast that could make immunocompromised people sick. The yogurt, which comes in a 24-pack of 100-gram servings, could have been on shelves at a Costco warehouse in Canada between Sept. 3 and Sept. 19.

Danone Canada, a food company known for its dairy-based products, makes the yogurt and issued the recall.

“The food safety risk is low as this yeast is not known to grow in refrigerated temperatures,” according to Danone.

Customers who are concerned can identify the recalled probiotic yogurt by checking the best before dates. If those dates are Oct. 18, Oct. 20 or Oct. 22, the yogurt should be thrown out.

“Do not consume it,” Danone said.

“You may return the affected product to a Costco warehouse to obtain a full refund.”

Earlier in September, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency posted a notice that the 24-pack of Kirkland Signature Greek Yogurt was being recalled because of mould.

“Do not use, sell, serve or distribute the affected product,” the agency said in a news release on Sept. 10.

The maker of the yogurt, food company General Mills Canada Co., issued the recall for customers in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Quebec and Saskatchewan.

The cause for the recall was listed as “microbial contamination” and was “non-harmful.” It was a Class 3 recall, meaning there was a low risk that eating the food would lead to “undesirable health problems,” per the agency.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency did not immediately respond to a request for comment before publication.

It is not clear if the recalls are linked.
