Arsenal and Manchester City played out a cagey goalless first half at Emirates Stadium as Mateo Kovacic avoided a red card for the visitors.

The Gunners were without Bukayo Saka for the first time in 88 Premier League games and made a nervy start. Goalkeeper David Raya was particularly afflicted and William Saliba made a vital challenge to prevent Nathan Ake from giving the champions a fourth-minute lead after Declan Rice cleared off the line from Josko Gvardiol.

Eddie Nketiah shanked wide from Arsenal's best opening before Kovacic took centre stage for all the wrong reasons.

First the Croatia midfielder was booked for a lunge on Martin Odegaard, which was checked by the VAR before the officials opted against upgrading to a red card. Shortly afterwards, Kovacic was late again and made contact with Declan Rice's ankle but referee Michael Oliver awarded a free-kick and nothing more.

90th minute: Four minutes of injury time for City to avoid back-to-back Premier League defeats for the first time since 2018.

87th minute: GOOOOOOOAAAAAAALLLLLL!!!!!! Gabriel Martinelli!!!!!!!

Martinelli has surely won it for Arsenal!!!! The substitutes are all involved as Tomiyasai wins a knockdown, Havertz holds up play in the manner of classic centre-forward and Martinelli drives past Ederson via a huge deflection off Ake. Not that he or the majority inside this stadium care one jot.

85th minute: Odegaard bursts into space to cause some panic in the City box. Ake keeps his head to make a vital challenge on Jesus, though. The VAR check is a swift one. A fine tackle on what has been a very good afternoon for both defences.

79th minute: Doku tried to dribble from deep again and is slightly fortunate to get a free-kick. Someone tell him this is on a knife edge and he's supposed to be nervous.

77th minute: Doku looks to dribble out of deep inside his own territory. White slides in to win the ball, then Arsenal win a corner. Good hustle. Walker gets up to Odegaard's in-swinger.

75th minute: Martinelli does his bit for livewire wing play, beating Silva to find Odegaard 30 yards out. The long-range shot is disappointing. Zinchenko, Jorginho and Nketiah come off for Arsenal, with Tomiyasu, Partey and Havertz on. All straight swaps by the looks of things.

74th minute: Doku runs menacingly at White and wins the corner. He's a man who could change the feel of what has been a very dour affair.

69th minute: Zinchenko comes out on top on his first one-v-one with Doku. Not many players get to say that.

68th minute: John Stones is also coming on for his first Premier League appearance of the season after an injury lay-off. Kovacic makes way to quieter boos than he might have expected. Alvarez more surprisingly on his way. Stones goes to the base of the midfield, with Silva pushing on alongside his compatriot Nunes.

65th minute: A nice City attack breaks down as Gvardiol leathers the ball to the wrong part of Islington. Matheus Nunes and Jeremy Doku are going to come on for the visitors.

63rd minute: Odegaard' delivery is good again and City need a couple of goes at clearing. Zinchenko shows them how by blootering a volley miles over.

62nd minute: The ball bobs over and around the City area. Jesus brings it down and wins a corner off Ake.

58th minute: The free-kick was a non-event but Lewis might have got City's juices flowing again. Gvardiol and Foden combine but Alvarez is crowded out before he can shoot.

55th minute: Rico Lewis gets room to move through the midfield. Martinelli bundles him over. The teenager gets up and smashes the ball into the net but play had already been stopped. He also landed on the ball with his arm so it wouldn't have counted.

51st minute: Good from Rice again, who feeds Martinelli and Arsenal have their first shot on target of the match. Ederson holds.

50th minute: Corner to Arsenal, won by Nketiah after a driving rin by Rice. Ederson flaps under pressure, Jesus smashes back towards the goalmouth and Silva blocks.

47th minute: Martinelli gets an early look at City and curls a cross just beyond Jesus.

46th minute: We're back and, remarkably, so is Mateo Kovacic. Martinelli is on for Trossard in a straight swap on the Arsenal right wing. Raya's first involvement sees Alvarez flying towards him again. He's see the Argentina star in his sleep tonight.

Halftime: Goalless and a pretty bizarre lack of quality from both sides. Kovacic and his lack of a red card the big talking point.

45th minute: There'll be two additional minutes in a fairly forgettable first half. Arsenal should be the happier of the two teams given how they've recovered from their nervy start.

41st minute: Saliba deals with the corner. He's been quietly immense so far in a game where not too many players on either side should be entirely happy with their efforts.

40th minute: City play an attack off Haaland and Foden finds Gvardiol. That's a lovely cross that has Raya in no-man's land. Zinchenko clears behind.

38th minute: Zinchenko drills a couple of speculative shots into a mass of his former team-mates. Lewis looks to release Haaland on the break but Saliba slams the door.

37th minute: Raya picks out Jesus with a doozy of a long pass. Do that more often! Jesus makes a mess of the cross but Arsenal are scrapping and scrambling to fine effect now and keep the attack going.

35th minute: Mateo Kovacic, you lucky, lucky man. The City midfielder is late again and fouls Rice. You have to say, if he wasn't on a yellow card, he'd probably get one there. Big call from Michael Oliver and does Guardiola remove the Croatia playmaker to spare him?

34th minute: Haaland brings down a long ball and tees up Alvarez, who you expect to do better from 25 yards. High wide and not so handsome.

32nd minute: Odegaard swings in a freekick and Ederson needs two bites at it. This is Arsenal's best period. Kovacic's challenge has helped to galvanise the crowd.

29th minute: The Kovacic challenge is being checked by VAR to be upgraded to a red. The officials opt to stay with the original decision. It feels like the right call, while also acknowledging that Kovacic is a lucky boy for a reckless piece of play.

28th minute: Odegaard pumping up the home ground, who have descended into a largely nervous murmur. They respond and Arsenal attack. Dias clears Zinchenko's cross but the hosts have the second ball and a chance to build something. Kovacic scythes moronically into Odegaard and has to be booked. That's two of City's Rodri replacements walking a tightrope.

26th minute: Dias misjudges a searching ball from Zinchenko and Nketiah gets behind the City centre-back. He cuts inside but thrashes wastefully wide. Not a very good chance but a better one than he made it look.

25th minute: Jorginho lifts a delicious little ball over the City defence and Jesus brings it down on his chest. Unfortunately for Arsenal, he fouled Foden to do so.

24th minute: More nonsense from Raya who gives the ball to Kovacic inside the final third. Arsenal scramble back to avert the danger but their keeper is living obscenely dangerously.

22nd minute: Ake finds Gvardiol in oceans of space down the Arsenal right. The Croatia defender is very wasteful. City need to sharpen up in the final third. Arsenal look to counter and Silva is booked for bringing down Nketiah.

21st minute: Rice reads Gvardiol's square pass, Odegaard looks to launch an attack but boots the ball right back to City. The Gunners feel like a team who need a foothold at the moment.

20th minute: Dias is allowed to advance and Arsenal's decision is vindicated as the City centre-back chips a pass to no one in particular and out for a goal kick. Another passage of play that makes the game feel a like poker-like.

17th minute: GOOD HEAVENS DAVID RAYA, WHAT ARE YOU DOING??? The Arsenal goalkeeper takes his time in the sunshine. Just your perfect Sunday, right? Well, Alvarez jackhammers after him, Raya is unawares and blunders a pass straight into the Argentina forward. He's lucky to see the ball ripple into the side netting.

16th minute: Alvarez and Lewis snap into a couple of second balls to get Walker into a crossing position. He looks for Haaland but that's a straightforward take for Raya.

14th minute: City's press, with Lewis high up alongside Haaland, is proving very disciplined and making life difficult for the Arsenal defence in Raya, in particular, when it comes to building play.

11th minute: A comedically crude and prolonged drag back on Foden from Jorginho earns the Italy international a booking. A long way to go to be getting involved in that sort of caper.

10th minute: Odegaard delivers, Nketiah heads it up in the air, Silva slices the case off his clearance. Pleasingly Sunday League nonsense from the two best teams in the country.

9th minute: Space for Jesus on the right and he wins a corner off Gvardiol. Arsenal growing into this.

8th minute: Ake looks for Haaland over the top. The backspin on the the ball deceives both of them, Saliba loses his footing but recovers. Not his tidiest bit of defending but it gets the crowd going.

5th minute: Raya is nowhere for the corner, Gvardiol knocks across goal and Rice clears out of the goalmouth. The ball comes back in and Saliba does brilliantly to prevent Ake from converting. Nervy moments for Arteta's men!

4th minute: Raya shanks a clearance to Gvardiol, who charges into the Gunners half and Rice hoof out for a corner. City are suffocating and unsettling their hosts thus far

2nd minute: The early indications are that Silva will tuck into central midfield with Kovacic for City, meaning an unfamiliar right-wing berth for Alvarez, who will have support from Lewis inside him on that side of the field.

2 mins from KO: Here they are. Handshakes, songs, sunshine. The stage is set.

5 mins from KO: The City team are already in the tunnel. The television camera focuses in on 18-year-old Rico Lewis. It's a huge day for the richly talented youngster. Arsenal are out to join them looking all business.

20 mins from KO: For all the talk about Rodri and Saka's respective absences, this game will hit differently without Kevin De Bruyne. The City playmaker is expected to be out until around the turn of the year with a hamstring injury. He has a phenomenal record against Arsenal, with eight goals and five assists in 20 matches across all competitions. Three of those goals and a couple of assists came in last season's Premier League games.

40 mins to KO: It's hard to see Saka's absence as anything other than a huge blow for Arsenal, but it is at least good to see common sense prevail when it comes to the England superstar's workload and fitness woes of late. Also, City know first hand how brilliantly effective Jesus can be on the right wing. He will try to make sure Ake and Gvardiol have their hands full to leave the creative threat of Foden isolated. Arteta benching Kai Havertz to bring a bit more solidity into his midfield was to be expected but you sense he's have preferred a fully fit Thomas Partey over Jorginho in an ideal world.

58 mins to KO: And here's the City team. Rico Lewis' impressive midweek display in Leipzig gets him the nod in central midfield alongside Mateo Kovacic. Bernardo Silva and Phil Foden will start on the wings, with Jeremy Doku and Jack Grealish primed to make an impact from the bench if required.

It looks like Arsenal have been handed a huge fitness boost, with Bukayo Saka, Thomas Partey and Gabriel Martinelli all getting off the team bus. John Stones has travelled with City despite Pep Guardiola saying he is not ready to start. Mateo Kovacic, Rico Lewis, Matheus Nunes and Kalvin Phillips are all theoretically part of the solution as Guardiola grapples with the third and final game of Rodri's domestic suspension.
