Bayer Leverkusen beats Werder Bremen, claims first-ever ...

Bayer Leverkusen's dream season has become a reality, as the club beat Werder Bremen 5-0 on Sunday and clinched its first-ever Bundesliga title.

The victory was Leverkusen's ninth straight this season.

Florian Wirtz scored three in the second half to lead the attack, with Victor Boniface and Granit Xhaka also scoring to give Leverkusen victory.

Leverkusen has competed in Germany's top league since the 1979-80 season.

The West German squad has opened its season with 30 straight matches without a defeat - 26 wins and four draws. 

Their 19 goals conceded are far-and-away the fewest in the Bundesliga this season, as 34-year-old keeper and captain Lukas Hradecky has been excellent in his 29 appearances.

Xabi Alonso's squad are the first to unseat Bayern Munich as Bundesliga champions since 2012-13. Prior to this season, Bayern had claimed 11 straight Bundesliga titles.

Leverkusen claims the title with five games remaining on the schedule. They return to action against Dortmund on Apr. 21.
