Bayern Munich vs Celtic LIVE: Champions League result and ...

Celtic missed out on a place in the Champions League last-16 despite a spirited and superb outing away from home against Bayern Munich.
The hosts led 2-1 after the first leg in Scotland but looked off the pace in a disjointed first half where they barely threatened Celtic’s goal and went into the break as the second best team.
Brendan Rodgers’ side had created plenty of decent chances but it was former Bayern man Nicolas Kuhn who sent the visitors ahead and looked like forcing the match to extra time.
With the Hoops now level on aggregate, Bayern piled on the pressure in the last 20 minutes and it was a substitute, Alphonso Davies, who provided the difference. With the last kick of the game, Davies arrived at the back post and turned home a rebound from Kasper Schmeichel after the goalkeeper kept out a headed effort from Leon Goretzka.
It was an incredible end to a fine match but Bayern Munich are the ones to progress.

“We come off that pitch with no regrets. It’s a real, real sore win but I think we can be proud of ourselves.

Maeda to break Celtic record?
19:45 , Mike Jones
Celtic’s Daizen Maeda has scored four Champions League goals this season, the most by a Japanese player in a season and the most by a Bhoys player in a European Cup campaign since Joseph Craig in 1977-78 (four).
Only three have scored more in a season – Stephen Chalmers in 1966-67 (5), William Wallace in 1970-71 (5) and Lou Macari in 1971-72 (5).
Musiala the creator
19:40 , Mike Jones
Jamal Musiala has created 15 chances while under high-intensity pressure from an opposition player in the Champions League this season, with only Florian Wirtz (19) doing so more often.
Three of those have resulted in assists for goals, with no player setting up more under such pressure.

Celtic failed to attempt a single shot in the first half of the first leg against Bayern Munich but in the second half they had nine shots to Bayern’s five.
They also completed more passes (239 vs 213) and had more possession (53%), while their 19 touches in Bayern’s box were the most by a team in a half of Champions League football against Bayern since Real Madrid in the second half in May 2024 (23).

Bayern's blazing streak
19:25 , Mike Jones
Bayern Munich are unbeaten in their last 20 home matches in the Champions League (W16 D4).

Celtic's German woes

Celtic have played 15 away games against German opposition in Europe, and are still looking for their first such victory (D3 L12).

Is Bayern's progress assured?

Brendan Rodgers praised Harry Kane as one of the best in the world in his position but bemoaned his side’s actions after Celtic fell to a 2-1 loss in the first leg of their Champions League play-off tie.
Kane volleyed in from a corner not long after half-time at Celtic Park to give the German side a 2-0 lead, with Michael Olise having opened the scoring on the stroke half-time.

'The goal is to win'
18:40 , Mike Jones
Bayern Munich hold a one-goal lead in this tie and Vincent Kompany hopes to extend that by leading this team to victory in Munich.
He said: "My first thought is never about 'what happens if...'
“My thought is always that we can win something. We won at Celtic Park, which doesn't happen often; very few teams manage that.
“That was also the goal in Leverkusen and is again tomorrow. I'm not thinking about anything else, except whether we can perform to our best.”
Pre-match thoughts from Bayern coach Vincent Kompany
18:35 , Mike Jones
At his pre-match press conference yesterday the Bayern boss said: "Celtic have done really well so far in the Champions League.
“They can always be a threat. But we won at Celtic Park and earned a point in Leverkusen.
“When results are good, that gives you extra strength, and that should help us tomorrow."
Musiala on draw with Leverkusen
18:30 , Mike Jones
Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen played out a 0-0 draw in the Bundesliga at the weekend in what was a clash at the top of the table.
Despite not winning the crucial match, Jamal Musiala says Bayern took lessons from the game.
He said: "We've had a lot of possession this season so we hadn't had something like against Leverkusen, where we needed to defend a lot.
“It was a good experience. You need to do something like that at some point, and we can learn from it. And we can take it into the games to come.
“We didn't have our best day, but we still didn't lose. That's a good sign for the team."
'It won't be an easy game'
18:25 , Mike Jones
"It won't be an easy game,” said Bayern midfielder Jamal Musiala ahead of the match.
“We saw how it was in Glasgow. We need to prepare well, need to make sure we're fresh and mentally ready.
“We need to be 100% on it, start well and don't let up, and then hope we can win."
Rodgers on facing Bayern Munich
18:20 , Mike Jones
“It is a challenge at this level. But it’s something that we want to embrace, that challenge,” Brendan Rodgers said about tonight’s second leg.
“We’ve done very well to get to this point. When you get to this point, you want to play top-level teams. This is a team that has world-class players.
“I think it’s just spelling out that you come to this level and you have to play without any fear.
“I think there’s worse things in life that can happen than losing a game of football. So for us, we want to ensure that when we come in after the game, if we don’t go through, we’ve given it absolutely everything.”
Brendan Rodgers wants Celtic to ‘play without fear’ against Bayern Munich
18:15 , Mike Jones
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has urged his team to play without fear and have no regrets against Bayern Munich.
Rodgers’ side have travelled to Germany 2-1 down in the Champions League knockout phase play-off but Daizen Maeda’s late goal at Parkhead has given the Hoops fans a glimmer of hope.
Celtic are in the knockout rounds for the first time in 12 years and Rodgers feels the pressure is off ahead of their second leg at the Allianz Arena.

When are the next rounds played?
18:10 , Mike Jones
The last-16 ties will be played across the weeks of 4/5 and 11/12 March.
The round after that is the quarter-finals, which are played in April, with the semi-finals taking place in late April and early May.
This season, the final will be held on 31 May 2025, at Bayern Munich’s Allianz Arena.
The full dates for the next round are as follows:
Round of 16: 4/5 & 11/12 March 2025
Quarter-finals: 8/9 & 15/16 April 2025
Semi-finals: 29/30 April & 6/7 May 2025
Final: 31 May 2025
Who else could be in the draw?
18:05 , Mike Jones
There will obviously be another eight sides in the draw for the round of 16, and these will be the eight sides who are victorious in the knockout round play-off ties.
The second legs of those ties happen this week, with the first four taking place today.
Here are the scores across those eight matches going into the second leg:
AC Milan 0-1 Feyenoord
Benfica 1-0 Monaco
Atalanta 1-2 Club Brugge
Bayern Munich 2-1 Celtic
Dortmund 3-0 Sporting CP
Real Madrid 3-2 Man City
PSG 3-0 Brest
PSV 1-2 Juventus
Which teams are definitely in the draw?
18:01 , Mike Jones
The teams who finished in the top eight of the competition's new league phase table automatically qualified for the last 16.
The eight teams who have already qualified are Liverpool, FC Barcelona, Arsenal, Inter Milan, Atletico Madrid, Bayer Leverkusen, Lille and Aston Villa.
According to the new rules, these sides were all placed into seeded pairs ahead of the round of 16, and will all play the second legs of their ties at home.
The seeded pairs consisted of the teams in first and second, third and fourth, fifth and sixth and seventh and eighth – for example, Liverpool and Barcelona are one seeded pair, and so on.
The seeding is also relevant for the last 16 as it determines which of two opponents the club will be drawn against.
For example, the first seeds will face the winners of the knockout phase play-off ties involving the 15th, 16th, 17th and 18th-placed teams.
To that end, Liverpool and Barcelona will face the two winners of the matches involving PSG, Benfica, Monaco and Brest – what the draw does is simply decide exactly which of the two teams faces who.

Kane on Bayern's first leg win
17:40 , Mike Jones
Harry Kane was the first player to speak to TNT Sports at the conclusion of the first leg and he said that “whenever you win a game like this, you can always be pleased”.
“Obviously it was a shame to concede a goal but they put us under pressure at the end.
“We knew the atmosphere would give them a bit of momentum. We had to be patient, we knew we would have more of the ball, more possession.
“In the end it was a great finish from Michael [Olise], sometimes you need a bit of special quality to open a game like this up,” he added.
Brendan Rodgers' reaction to first leg defeat
17:35 , Mike Jones
After Celtic were defeated 2-1 at home in the first leg Brendan Rodgers reflected on the performance saying that his “overriding feeling” was that his side were a little too passive at times.
He said: “We still feel, without doing so much with the ball, that we were stable enough without it, but they get a little bit of luck.
“It was about us being more aggressive, so that’s our mindset. We then give away a goal.”
“The one player you don’t leave unmarked is arguably the best striker in world football,” he added regarding Harry Kane’s goal.
“At 2-1, they’re hanging on then, so that’s what we can take from it, we’ve got one more shot. It’s a new level for a lot of the players.
“One more shot, a wonderful arena, let’s go and see where it takes us. We’ve shown that we can play football, we can be a threat. We’re still right in the tie.”
Celtic’s unforgivable error leaves them requiring a Champions League miracle
17:30 , Mike Jones
Celtic had talked up the visit of “European royalty” in Glasgow, of “hurting” Bayern Munich under the fierce lights and thunderous atmosphere of a big Champions League night at Parkhead.
Then the England captain rolled into town and Celtic unfurled the red carpet, leaving Harry Kane unmarked at the back post to put Bayern in control of this Champions League play-off tie.
Celtic knew they had to take a lead to Munich to have a chance of progressing, and now a minor miracle is required after their first Champions League knockout tie since 2013 ended in defeat.

Bayern Munich vs Celtic
17:00 , Mike Jones
Celtic travel to face Bayern Munich in the second leg of their Champions League play-off tie today, with Brendan Rodgers’ side facing an uphill task to qualify in Germany.
The Scottish champions produced a spirited display last week but fell to a 2-1 loss in the first leg at Celtic Park, with some naivety showing through as Bayern’s superior quality eventually showed.
Goals from Michael Olise and Harry Kane gave Bayern the win, and now Celtic travel to Bavaria needing to overturn a deficit if they are to take a place in the competition’s last 16.
And while the Scottish side showed flashes of potential after Daizen Maeda got a goal back in the first leg, they face a mammoth task at the Allianz as they look to pull off what would be one of the club’s most famous victories.
Good evening!
