Canelo vs. GGG 3 Predictions, Betting Odds & Fight Picks

Saul "Canelo" Alvarez & Gennady "GGG" Golovkin meet for the 3rd time on September 17 in Las Vegas. We give our prediction & picks here.

On Saturday, September 17, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez fights Gennady Golovkin at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The venue is packed to capacity, with tickets sold out within minutes of the final leg of this trilogy being announced, but armchair fans won’t miss out thanks to the live TV coverage.

There aren’t too many fights that attract the interest of casual sports fans, pulling them from their usual favourites to the noble art. But this is one of them. The two have met twice before, with the opening contest ending in a draw before Canelo won the rematch to edge ahead on the head-to-head scores.

With Golovkin now 40 years old, this looks like the final opportunity of his career to get the win over Canelo that has eluded him so far. It will be a night of fireworks in Sin City as one of the biggest punchers in professional boxing history returns to face a living legend of Mexican boxing.

Here we go again

In their first fight in Sin City in September 2017, many pundits and ex-fighters believed that GGG deserved the victory that night. But the scorecards didn’t agree, returning 118-110 Golovkin, 115-113 Alvarez and 114-114, resulting in a draw.

The second bout came in September 2018, and, on this occasion, we got a winner, with Canelo handed the victory. But it was another tight one with two judges scoring it 115-113 in Saul’s favour while a third judge settled it as a draw.

The scorecards in each bout show how well-matched these warriors are, with neither willing to take a backwards step nor concede ground in their quest to cement a legacy.

The Mexican superstar brings a professional record detailing 57 wins against two defeats and a pair of draws. He has 39 knockouts already on his card, with each of his last three wins coming inside the distance.

But in his last fight, he was beaten on points by Dmitry Bivol in Vegas in May this year.

Alvarez isn’t used to losing fights, so he has little experience of having to bounce back from a poor result.

It’s good when he’s reeling off wins and staying active, but the training camps become more difficult following such a punishing defeat to Bivol.

We all knew Canelo would eventually push his luck too far, which he did at light heavyweight, with the champion winning 115-113 on all three of the judges’ scorecards.

Last chance for GGG?

Saturday’s fight is likely to be the last chance for Golovkin to score a win over Canelo, with the pair likely to end their rivalry following the completion of the trilogy.

He came close to scoring an upset win on the first occasion, and he was competitive in the second bout but lost that one. So, he must come up with something different here.

Golovkin is a great boxer with amazing strength, but his style is something Alvarez has already worked out.

Triple G will come to fight and come to win, meaning he will be on the attack early, and Canelo must discourage him from marching forward. The best way to achieve that is to meet him in the middle of the ring.

That’s what happened last time, and it seemed to catch GGG by surprise. He struggled to get to grips with his opponent for much of the evening.

What version of Canelo will we see here? It doesn’t matter. Golovkin must be ready for anything, including a change in tactics.

GGG returns to Las Vegas with confidence, having won his last four fights since his 2018 loss to Canelo. He is a man on form and has stayed in the middleweight division, which should give him an edge over an opponent that has been bulking and then cutting.

Golovkin’s key to success here is unrelenting pressure and a high work rate. He must put his opponent under pressure from the first bell and push him back against the ropes before unloading with big hooks and uppercuts to the body. This will be a thriller.

Who will get the last word in Vegas?

How will Canelo respond to his defeat to Bivol? His confidence may well have taken a bit of a knock, but few boxing fans will pay much attention to a loss suffered a few divisions higher.

Canelo seems to improve with the passing of each fight, and in his last meeting with Triple G, it looked like he had the measure of his opponent, meeting fire with fire and pushing him back.

A similar approach is expected here, with Alvarez being the aggressor, taking Golovkin out of his comfort zone and forcing him to retreat.

The Kazakh fighter has enjoyed a career as a come-forward fighter, but can he box on the backfoot? That’s what Team Alvarez wants to find out. We’re backing Canelo for another win on the scorecards.
