Here’s a rundown of what you should know, including who is eligible and the estimated rebate amount of each province.

What is the carbon tax all about?

The program taxes the carbon footprint of fossil fuels. Propane, aviation fuel, diesel and even heating oils are included in the tax.

The tax rose from $65 per tonne to $80 per tonne of emissions on April 1. That comes out to 17 cents per litre on gasoline, 21 cents per litre on diesel and 15 cents per cubic metre on natural gas.

The price per tonne on fossil fuels increases by $15 every year until it reaches $170 by 2030.

When will carbon tax rebates go out?

Those who filed their taxes after March 15 will receive their first instalment by about May 15. Those who file after April 15 will receive it as late as July.

Who will receive the carbon tax payments?

Provinces that participate in the federal carbon tax program — Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta, Saskatchewan, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, P.E.I and Newfoundland and Labrador — qualify for the rebate.

British Columbia, Quebec and Northwest Territories have their own carbon tax system for consumers so residents there don’t receive the federal payment. Yukon and Nunavut use the federal system but have an agreement to distribute the proceeds themselves.

How much will Canadians receive?

Ottawa has said the payments are calculated based on the number of adults and children in a household.

The government recently unveiled an online estimator that displays the rebate value you should receive. It asks four simple questions to estimate how much you can expect to receive.

Alternatively, here are the quarterly amounts, by province, for an individual, a couple, and a family of four. In single parent households, the first child is treated the same as a spouse for the rebate amount.

Alberta

Single: $225 Couple: $337.50 Family of four: $450

Saskatchewan
