Chandra Arya will not be running for leadership of the Liberal Party after all.
The Ottawa MP announced on social media that he “will not be permitted to enter the leadership race.”
Arya, who has represented the riding of Nepean since he was first elected in 2015, had put his name forward as a candidate in early January after the resignation of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

“While I await their official communication, I am carefully considering my next steps,” Arya said in the post. “This decision raises significant questions about the legitimacy of the leadership race and, by extension, the legitimacy of the next Prime Minister of Canada.”
Parker Lund, a spokesperson for the Liberal Party, confirmed in an email that Arya “will not be a candidate for Leader of the Liberal Party.”
Arya’s exit from the race leaves six candidates: former deputy prime minister Chrystia Freeland, former banker Mark Carney, House Leader Karina Gould, Nova Scotia MP Jaime Battiste and former MPs Frank Baylis and Ruby Dhalla.
The party will announce the winner of the race on March 9.
