More from Gareth Southgate

"What I would say is: this group of players have bene unbelievable for the country, and it’s important that people stay with them. They’re still going to be very strong moving forward.

“Look, in the end, this is about winning matches with England. Tonight was the sort of night that a lot of my predecessors have had. I’m not gonna say it doesn’t hurt. But it’s very clear to me what we’ve been trying to do across these four matches.

"The irony is that the two Nations League campaigns are probably the ones that have heaped negativity and pressure onto us, and you wouldn’t normally have that as an England manager.

“It’s my job to protect the players. They’ve been exceptional in their attitude, they’ve never stopped, and the results are my responsibility.

"We’ve had some unbelievable nights with England in the last three or four years, and tonight is the other side of it. That’s the reality of football.”

Gareth Southgate’s post-match verdict

“We picked a young team, with energy, and when the game started to go against them it started to look that way. That’s my responsibility in the end.

“At half-time we made changes that gave us a little bit more attacking impetus, but we were a bit more open as well. In the end we left ourselves wide open.

“I’ve just said to the players that across the four matches it’s my responsibility – I tried to balance looking at new players and tried to rest players. We couldn’t keep flogging our more experienced and better players, but in the end the teams I’ve selected haven’t been strong enough to get a result in the two Hungary games.

"The other two performances have been more positive than perhaps the reaction to it. But I totally understand tonight is a chastening experience.

“We’ve seen that you’ve got to be at full strength. It was an important experience for lots of young players – we’ve learned a lot, particularly the Germany and Italy games.

"Hungary are a good side, we knew that. I think I’ve given [the players] too much to do tonight, in the end, and I understand the reaction to that in the stadium."

Germany 5-2 Italy

The two European Championship finalists have lost tonight by a combined score of 9-2.

It could have been worse for Italy: they were 5-0 down before getting a couple of (non-) consolation goals.

'Shut up you clowns'

I'm with Jamie Carragher on this. It was a shocking night, and there are concerns about England's attacking balance*, but if I was an England fan I'd be very, very careful what I wished for.

*Forget them conceding four tonight; it was a freak game and the defence has generally been very reliable.

Harry Kane’s reaction

“It’s a disappointing night. First half I thought we created enough chances to score, but that’s kind of been the story of our Nations League so far.

“In the second half, it’s unacceptable to react like we did when we went 2-0 down. But we haven’t had a camp like this for a long time. It’s no time to panic, we need to keep our heads up.

“It’s our first big defeat in a long time. Our defence has been the structure of our success over the last four or five years. It’s a night to forget but we’ve got to take it on the chin.

“We’re preparing for a World Cup and that’s the most important thing. We’ll learn a lot from this camp.

“[Do you understand the booing?] Yeah but let’s not forget where we’ve come from. Our first final in nearly 60 years, semi-finals of the World Cup … it’s no time to panic. I understand the frustration. It’s not gonna be perfect every game – we have to understand that, the fans have to understand that.

“[The fans were booing Gareth Southgate, are you confident you’re on the right track with him?] Yeah, without question. That’s not even a question I should be answering.”

Full time: England 0-4 Hungary

England are booed off after suffering their worst home defeat since 1928.

It was an astonishing, surreal game. England dominated possession throughout, but were picked off ruthlessly by a streetwise Hungarian team.

Wow. A drama just turned into a crisis.

GOAL! England 0-4 Hungary (Gazdag 89)

This is officially astonishing. Daniel Gazdag has made it 4-0 to Hungary, clipping the ball coolly over Aaron Ramsdale after a killer pass from Adam Nagy.

Germany 5-1 Italy

With all the excitement at Molineux, I forget to tell you about three more goals in Monchengladbach.

Timo Werner scored two in as many minutes to put Germany 5-0 up before Wilfried Gnonto scored a non-consolation for Italy.

England substitution: Maguire for Saka

85 min: England 0-3 Hungary Harry Maguire is booed onto the field, which is ridiculous. He replace Bukayo Saka (and John Stones).

"You don't know what you're doing," chant the home crowd again.

Mutiny! "You don't know what you're doing" chants here. One fan just called Southgate a "negative bastard" as he left.

John Stones is sent off!

82 min: England 0-3 Hungary England are having a complete shocker. John Stones has been given a second yellow card for a perceived elbow on Gazdag.

I don't think he did much wrong, in truth, but he has to go and England are down to 10 men.

GOAL! England 0-3 Hungary (Nagy 80)

There are boos all round Molineux as Zsolt Nagy rams Hungary into a 3-0 lead!

Nago had a header blocked by Stones, but Adam retrieved the loose ball and laid it back invitingly to Nagy, 20 yards out.

He slipped as he took the shot but still managed to whistle a superb low drive that beat the diving Ramsdale at the near post.

"You don't know what you're doing," chant the home fans, which, though a complete overreaction, is a slightly alarming development in a World Cup year.

Kane hits the bar!

77 min: England 0-2 Hungary Mount's cross is headed onto the top of the bar by Kane, who then goes down in the area as he attempts to retrieve the rebound.

It looked like a dive, and the referee wasn't interested.

The first header was an excellent effort, though he might have been offside so I'm not certain it would have counted.

Foden shoots wide

76 min: England 0-2 Hungary A decent effort from Phil Foden, who drags wide from the edge of the area after good play from Raheem Sterling.

Despite having over 70 per cent of the possession, England haven't really looked like scoring.

The 69-year itch

75 min: England 0-2 Hungary The last time Hungary won away to England was, yep, the famous 6-3 win at Wembley in 1953.

Nothing will top that, but this would still be a landmark victory. In truth, they have outsmarted England tonight.

GOAL! England 0-2 Hungary (Sallai 70)

Roland Sallai gets his second! This is turning into a nightmare for England.

It stemmed from a mistake by Phillips, who dithered on the ball and was dispossessed by the substitute Adam.

He slid it across the area to Sallai, who took the shot early and flicked it past the left foot of Ramsdale.

It was a lovely finish from Sallai, and a superbly weighted pass from Adam.
