Match report, analysis and highlights after Everton and Liverpool shared the spoils at Goodison Park.

GOODISON PARK, LIVERPOOL — Liverpool and Everton were forced to settle for a share of the spoils after a typically fiery Merseyside derby ended goalless.

The Toffees came agonisingly close to opening the scoring in the first half when Tom Davies hit the upright.

Frank Lampard's side also thought they had scored late in the second only for a VAR check to rule out a Conor Coady strike for offside.

But this was no one-sided contest, with Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz both striking the woodwork in quick succession for the Reds in the opening 45 minutes.

"There will be one man outside of Liverpool rubbing his hands together, that's Gareth Southgate."

Mohamed Salah then did the same in the fifth minute of time added on as Liverpool came agonisingly close to winning it.

As such, both teams could feel they deserved their point, even if it is a result neither would welcome.

For Liverpool, a draw extended a patchy start to the season in which they have already lost significant ground on the early leaders.

And Everton were left to consider a fourth consecutive league draw that leaves them in the lower reaches of the Premier League table.

Everton vs. Liverpool live updates, highlights from Premier League

FULLTIME: All over at Goodison Park and it's a point apiece after a goalless draw that was anything but boring. Those goalframes will need checking over after the hammering they've taken today.

95th min: Liverpool hit the woodwork again!

Mo Salah runs onto a ball at the back post and cracks it goalward but Pickford gets hand to it and that's back off the upright. Hard to tell whether the England goalkeeper's touch was influential there but he got there all the same.

Right until the bitter end! ????

90th min: Six minutes to be added on here.

87th min: Pickford at it again, getting down low to palm away a Firmino effort volleyed goalward from Salah's cross.

79th min: Joel Matip and Diogo Jota replace Harvey Elliott and Darwin Nunez for Liverpool.

76th min: Van Dijk beaten to the ball by Onana as Everton break and that's a deserved yellow card for the Dutchman.

69th min: Agony for Everton as they think they've taken the lead when Coady smashes in at the back post from a low Maupay cross but after a lengthy VAR check the lines show the defender was offside.

One fan really unhappy with that decision and runs onto the pitch to remonstrate with the referee before being dragged away.

65th min: And now Alisson is at it, the Brazilian doing brilliantly to get out and smother a Maupay shot that looked goalbound.

64th min: Three brilliant saves from Pickford keep Everton in it!

The Toffees keeper denies Firmino twice in quick succession with a stop from a low shot and then a header. And he's just as good to keep Fabinho out after Nunez lays the ball back at close range.

61st min: Everton getting in on the act now, with Idrissa Gueye taking the place of Tom Davies. Huge roars to welcome him back to Goodison Park for a second stint in blue.

58th min: Liverpool make changes at full-back with Andy Robertson and James Milner replacing Kostas Tsimikas and Trent Alexander-Arnold respectively.

49th min: Liverpool go close again, with Elliott's low cross forcing Pickford to get down and push the ball away before Tsimikas thrashes an attempt over.

46th min: Everton get us restarted.

One change at the break for Liverpool, with Roberto Firmino replacing Fabio Carvalho, who had a quiet half.

HALFTIME: Goalless at the break at Goodison Park but we've come as close as you possibly can to a breakthrough from each team, Tom Davies, Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez all hitting the frame of the goal.

43rd min: Liverpool hit the woodwork twice in quick succession!

The first is a brilliant fingertip save from Pickford to touch a Nunez's dipping effort on the bar, and the second sees Diaz crack the inside of the post after cutting in off the left.

The visitors now 2-1 up on woodwork strikes.

So close for Liverpool! ????

37th min: Onana clips Carvalho as he tries to get a one-two away and that's the first yellow card of the afternoon. The youngster now receiving treatment.

33rd min: Liverpool make a hash of clearing a Patterson cross from the right and when the ball falls he Davies he attempts to toe it in at the far post.

Unfortunately for the midfielder, his effort clips the top of the post and bounces away to safety.

27th min: Some tasty challenges flying in now, with Anthony Gordon giving and receiving in quick succession.

The youngster certainly knows what this game is all about.

19th min: Alexander-Arnold digs out a cross to the back post and Nunez's eyes light up... but he can't get his headed attempt on target.

16th min: The scene at Goodison Park as a minute applause rang out for Olivia Pratt-Korbel in the ninth minute of the game.

8th min: Fabinho loses the ball in the centre and Everton put together a quick break that ends in Maupay dragging a weak effort beyond the far post.

Fabinho now receiving treatment.

6th min: Liverpool dominating possession early doors but Everton won't mind, and they show exactly why with a break that ends in Onana cross gently into the palms of Alisson. That's the pattern of the game set.

1st min: Harvey Elliott gets the game started for Liverpool.

5 mins from kickoff: The teams are out and Goodison Park is rocking!

15 mins from kickoff: Former Everton forward Duncan Ferguson on TV punditry duties here today and he is currently geeing up the crowd from pitchside.

30 mins from kickoff: Both teams are out to warm up - Liverpool arriving to boos and Everton to cheers from those already in the ground.

The atmosphere is sure to play a big part in today's game.

50 mins from kickoff: That is one seriously bold midfield selection from Jurgen Klopp, with former Fulham duo Harvey Elliott and Fabio Carvalho preferred ahead of the vastly experienced James Milner.

As for Everton, Frank Lampard has shown no hesitation over throwing Neal Maupay straight into the mix - to be fair, this is definitely the sort of game he will relish.

60 mins from kickoff: Team news is in!

Everton: Pickford, Patterson, Coady, Tarkowski, Mykolenko, Davies, Onana, Iwobi, Maupay, Gray, Gordon.

Subs: Begovic, Keane, Allan, McNeil, Coleman, Gueye, Vinagre, Rondon, Mills.

Liverpool: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, van Dijk, Tsimikas, Elliot, Fabinho, Carvalho, Salah, Nunez, Diaz.

Subs: Adrian, Milner, Firmino, Jota, Robertson, Arthur, Matip, Bajcetic, Phillips.

75 mins from kickoff: Some early team news reaching us: Liverpool's deadline-day loan signing Arthur Melo will be named in the squad after receiving his international clearance in time.

85 mins from kickoff: An injury boost for the visitors.

90 mins from kickoff: Liverpool claimed a 4-1 win on their last visit, but that victory broke up a run of four straight draws with Everton at this venue.

With the Toffees having drawn their last three league fixtures, don't bet against the same result today.

120 mins from kickoff: Greetings from Goodison Park, where a raucous atmosphere is already building outside ahead of the 241st Merseyside derby. These games always deliver drama, but will it be the red or the blue side of the city of Liverpool who end the day with the bragging rights?
