Premier League leaders Liverpool make a midweek trip Wednesday to face their Merseyside derby rivals Everton at Goodison Park in a make-up game from their postponed December meeting.

Meeting for the first time since last April, Premier League leaders Liverpool make a midweek trip to face their Merseyside derby rivals Everton on Wednesday at Goodison Park.

The clubs were meant to contest this match in December, but bad weather forced the postponement of the match. It left the two clubs with a game in hand on the rest of the Premier League, which they will finally get a chance to cash in.

Liverpool will be looking for revenge after Everton surprisingly won the last meeting, 2-0, at this very venue, in a late-season match where neither team had a ton to play for competitively.

Thanks to Liverpool securing a Round of 16 bye in the Champions League, they had this week free for a Premier League makeup while many other top European clubs are in the midst of a nervy knockout playoff first-leg matches.

Everton vs. Liverpool prediction, odds

Sporting News football betting expert Kyle Bonn shares his best bets, props, and longshot fliers for some of the biggest matches in the sport each week. Since the start of 2024, he has correctly predicted 55% of 387 match outcomes via his 3-way moneyline leans for a total profit of 32.6 units.

While Liverpool have rarely trounced their Merseyside derby rivals in recent years, they have indeed enjoyed a period of dominance over Everton, with the Tofffees winning just three times against Liverpool since 2010, a stretch of 31 games.

A significant gulf has opened in the stature of these two clubs, leading to a significant talent gap on the pitch. Everton look largely safe from relegation, thanks in part to a recent three-game league winning streak during which they were good for all three results on the xG differential.

Yet asking them to take points off the league leaders feels like a bridge too far, especially given injuries to key players such as Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Dwight McNeil.

Everton vs. Liverpool best bet

  • Pick: Everton under. 0.5 goals
  • Odds: +110 (DraftKings)

Everton have one of the worst attacking units in the Premier League, in both creativity and finishing, and will be matched up against one of Europe's best defensive units. There's just no other play here than Everton to be shut out at nearly even money.

They have the fourth-lowest expected goals total in the English top flight, with just 1.21 xG per match, and they have converted just 24 goals from that tally, which is 4.90 below their xG total.

The 2-0 win over Liverpool last April broke a four-match goalless streak for Everton against their cross-town rivals, and they've been shut out in seven of their last 10 meetings.

Everton vs. Liverpool prop bet

  • Pick: Under 2.5 total goals
  • Odds: +110 on DraftKings

If there's one thing that has improved at Everton this season, it's their defensive acumen. Not only are Everton allowing fewer goals, but they're allowing fewer shots and are getting great goalkeeping as well.

Everton have conceded the ninth-fewest shots in the Premier League this season, a vast improvement from their sieve-like performances of the past. Additionally, they've got the seventh-lowest xGA per shot against, indicating they are not conceding many quality chances either.

Add in that Jordan Pickford has been worth a full 2.0 post-shot xG as well, and Everton should be able to keep a lid on this match, as they have against Liverpool in the past. While the Reds have been able to get consistent results in this derby across the last decade, they've scored 3+ goals only three times since the start of the 2017/18 season.
