A year after Paul and Lucille’s son died by suicide, the family tries to repair their damaged bond, with the help of a visit from a fox.
“I think it’s the reconnection to community because … (the family in the play) loses track of that. It’s the rebuilding and refiguring about what this means for their community and how does that mean they become a community again? And how are they different now because of this and embracing it,” director Katie German said of the hope and connectedness in the play.
The Youth Series presents the opera Songs My Mother Never Sung Me, with music and lyrics by playwright and composer Dave Clarke. The bilingual production is a heartfelt look at the relationship between a deaf mother and her hearing son. The opera is performed in English and ASL, without surtitles or interpretation.
“There’s a lot of comedy and it’s a love letter to my mum. Every mum has felt like a bad mother; everyone can relate to the feeling of responsibility and success and failure,” Clarke said.
This is How We Got Here is presented on Persephone Theatre’s main stage through Feb. 11. Tickets are $42 to $60, available at persephonetheatre.org.

GREYSTONE THEATRE: 10 OUT OF 12

Greystone Theatre presents 10 out of 12 by Anne Washburn, a wry comedy that delves behind the scenes to look at the work that goes into bringing a play to the stage. Taking notes at rehearsals for years, Washburn captures the decision-making and diverse personalities — including some big egos — behind the magic of theatre.
“10 out of 12 is not quite a show within a show; it’s a sort of comedic documentary of the rehearsal process that many will find very relatable. It’s also been a ton of fun,” said actor Scott Eaton, who plays the assistant stage manager.
“Inviting everyone to see the joys and frustrations that the people dedicated to theatre put themselves through is the magic for us,” added director Clare Middleton.
10 out of 12 runs in the John Mitchell Building at the University of Saskatchewan Feb. 7-10. Tickets are $13 to $22, available at artsandscience.usask.ca/drama/greystone.

“Our February show is going to be a fun-filled romp of infidelity, mistaken identities and murder. We’ve got a few familiar faces returning to our stage as well as some new local talent that we’re excited to showcase as part of our eighth season,” director Michael Neuert said.
“MFT audiences have come to expect an evening of amazing food and laughs with us and they’ll certainly get their fill with this show.”

“I had so much fun reimagining the story of Jack and the Beanstalk. Rather than a kid with a cow as his best friend we have a pirate — a pirate who sews sequined suits on the seven seas. Then we go into the world of the giant, and he has his own giant problems. How fun to play outside the box and follow this pirate/giant adventure,” playwright, director and narrator Crispi Lord said.
Captain Jack and the Beanstalk shows at the Refinery Feb. 10-19. Tickets are $12 to $17, available at wideopen.ca.
GORDON TOOTOOSIS NĪKĀNĪWIN THEATRE: TAYEN AND THE MIMI KWESAK

Gordon Tootoosis Nīkānīwin Theatre presents Tayen and the Mimi Kwesak, a heartwarming children’s story by Mona Kormish. While they make a ribbon skirt together, Malena’s grandmother shares stories from her childhood of the Mimi Kwesak, the little people.
Tayen and the Mimi Kwesan runs Feb. 22 to March 3 at Studio 914 before touring Saskatchewan schools and rural communities March 5-17. Tickets are $8.50, available at gtnt.ca.
