A Guelph man faces several weapons and drug charges after police recovered a loaded handgun while executing a search warrant at an east-end home.

On Monday evening, police attended a home near Grange Road and Starwood Drive after receiving information the resident might be in possession of a firearm. A loaded Glock handgun was observed in a bag laying on a bed. Officers held the scene and applied for a search warrant.

During a subsequent search of the residence officers recovered the handgun with the serial numbers altered, a baggie of suspected cocaine, a large amount of marijuana, contaminated digital scales and more than $15,000 in cash.

A 23-year-old Guelph man was arrested and charged with possessing a restricted firearm with ammunition, unauthorized possession of a firearm, careless storage of a firearm, possessing cocaine for the purpose of trafficking and possessing cannabis for the purpose of distribution. He was held for a bail hearing.

Child porn arrest

A Guelph man faces child pornography charges following his arrest Wednesday morning.

Members of the Guelph Police Service Internet Child Exploitation Unit -- along with the Technological Crimes Unit and Special Victims Unit --attended a residence near College Avenue West and Dovercliffe Road.

During the search, evidence was found and a 22-year-old male resident was arrested and charged with possessing child pornography, distributing child pornography and accessing child pornography. He will appear in court March 19.

Arrest after employee assaulted

A Guelph man faces charges after an employee of a downtown business was assaulted Wednesday morning.

Just before 9:30 a.m. police were called to the West Parkade for a male who was refusing to leave the area. Officers spoke to him and he did leave, but a short time later officers were called to another nearby business after the same male had assaulted an employee.

The male was located and advised he was under arrest, however he pulled away from officers and continued to resist. Eventually he was placed under arrest and transported to the police station.

A 29-year-old Guelph man is charged with assault, resisting arrest and failing to leave a premises when directed. He was held for a bail hearing and has been released to appear in court March 1.

Car stolen during movie

The Guelph Police Service is investigating after a car was stolen Wednesday evening while the owner was watching a movie.

Approximately 10 p.m. police received a call from a Guelph man, who reported his white 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT had been stolen from outside the Galaxy Cinemas on Woodlawn Road West.
