"We apologize for the concern this will cause but we have initiated a voluntary recall of select Jif® products sold in Canada due to potential salmonella contamination," says Smuckers on its website.

Officials advise anyone who believes they've become ill because of ingesting the peanut butter should call their doctor.

If you have any of the products, do not consume them. They should either be thrown out or returned to where they were purchased.

Products that are contaminated with salmonella may not smell spoiled but could still cause illness. Salmonella could be deadly for those with weakened immune systems and could cause a variety of symptoms including fever, vomiting and diarrhea.

The recall was triggered after a recall outside of Canada; there haven't been any cases of salmonella reported in Canada connected to the peanut butter as of the time of publication.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is following up on the recall.

"Our teams are coordinating a thorough investigation into this matter in collaboration with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency to determine appropriate steps," says Smuckers.
