FREDERICTON (GNB) – The following statement was issued today by Aboriginal Affairs Minister Arlene Dunn to mark National Indigenous Peoples Day:

I was proud to help raise the Wolastoqey, Mi’gmaq and Peskotomuhkati flags at the legislative assembly this morning in recognition of this important day – one that I hope is marked by celebration, appreciation, reflection, and thoughts about what you can do to advance reconciliation.

The unique histories, languages, traditions and spiritual beliefs of the Wabanaki, the Indigenous Peoples living within New Brunswick, continue to enrich our cultural diversity and quality of life. I encourage New Brunswickers to reflect upon the valuable contributions First Nations people make to this province.

As we gather for events and ceremonies today, I would like to remind New Brunswickers of our collective commitment to reconciliation and the meaningful journey we all must take for the betterment of New Brunswick, First Nations communities, and all who call this province home.

Watch. Listen. Learn – be an active partner in reconciliation. We all have a role to play.

Take the opportunity, for example, to experience one of the many beautiful powwows hosted by First Nations in New Brunswick throughout the summer. There is a full schedule available online. Or dive into the work that the government has done and is doing with regards to our Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action through the website we launched last year.

Our government is committed, together with First Nations leadership, to continuing the work on the Calls to Action. We have made important steps forward and will advance reconciliation and help to create a better, more inclusive New Brunswick.

Thank you / Merci / Woliwon / Wela’lin.
