Ottawa (Ontario) – The Hon. Pierre Poilievre, Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada and the Official Opposition, released the following statement on Nowruz:

“Today, 300 million people around the world come together in celebration of Nowruz. This joyous occasion marks spring’s arrival in the Northern Hemisphere and heralds in the Persian New Year.

“In Canada and across the globe, Persian, Afghan, Kurdish, Zoroastrian, Baháʼí, Ismaili Muslim, and Central Asian communities eagerly await the coming of the Spring Equinox to begin the celebration of this joyous new year festival. For 13 days, families participate in centuries-old traditions and customs to mark the beginning of spring.

“Nowruz, which means ‘new day,’ is a time of rebirth. Nowruz celebrates, above all, the victory of light over darkness.

“Nowruz is always a welcome opportunity for personal renewal. It allows celebrants to leave behind the challenges of the old year and prepare for the year ahead by undertaking resolutions that enrich their lives and communities.

“As people gather around the haft-seen table, light traditional bonfires with family and friends, or partake in the various other traditions associated with this rich holiday, I hope that the arrival of spring inspires new optimism and hope for all Canadians celebrating today. No matter how you celebrate, Nowruz is a time to close old chapters and embrace new beginnings.

“On behalf of my wife Anaida and all Conservatives, I wish families across the country a happy and healthy Nowruz filled with growth and prosperity.

“Nowruz Mobarak and Newroz Pirouz!”
