Severe thunderstorm watch in effect for Kingston and the area

Environment Canada has issued a ‘severe thunderstorm watch’ for Kingston and throughout the region, warning that conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms.

The watch is in effect for Kingston, Odessa, Frontenac Islands, Napanee, Consecon, Picton, Sandbanks Park, Stirling, Tweed, Madoc, Tamworth, Sydenham, South Frontenac, Central Frontenac, and Lanark County.

The thunderstorms, which are in the forecast for the afternoon of Friday, Jun. 2, 2023, and into the evening, may be capable of producing strong wind gusts and heavy rain, the national weather agency said.

“Thunderstorms are expected to develop this afternoon. These thunderstorms may be very slow moving and could produce very localized heavy rainfall if they remain in place over one area. Strong wind gusts and small hail are also possible,” Environment Canada said in the weather statement, which advises that localized heavy rainfall of 30 to 50 mm is possible.

“Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Hail is also possible. Heavy downpours are likely to cause flash floods and water pooling on roads.”

Reminding that lightning kills and injures Canadians every year, Environment Canada relayed that Emergency Management Ontario recommends people take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.
