WATERLOO — On Friday morning, rain falls on Ezra Avenue in advance of St. Patrick’s Day student parties.

Fencing lines Ezra Avenue from King Street to Albert Street, blocking the street from cars and people gathering. Security personnel is also in the area, in front of student buildings.

Students have again been urged to party in licensed establishments and homes this year, and avoid crowding the streets.

Periods of rain are expected to end in the afternoon, followed by cloudy conditions, making it possible that students might emerge once the rain stops.

Waterloo Regional Police officers are out in marked and unmarked vehicles, parked in the university area, including on Bricker Avenue.

Traffic officers will also be out, police said, including officers with the RIDE program.

Students decked in green attire are in the area.

Wilfrid Laurier University student Simon Van Hezewik said he doesn’t expect the rain to put a damper on students gathering. He will be partying with friends inside.

“They will be out no matter what, even if there are thunderstorms,” said the third-year music student.

Malia Mapp, a second-year psychology student at Laurier, lives on Ezra. The City of Waterloo along with police have “put in a lot of effort” to stop partying on Ezra, she said.

“It’s kind of an inconvenience, but realistically speaking, I don’t think they’re going to stop partying, no matter how hard they try,” she said.

Mapp said many of her friends have come to Waterloo to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day safely.

“I thought the rain would deter us, but I’ve decided that I’m not going to let it deter us, and we’re gonna have a good day no matter what. Hope everything goes well and everybody is safe,” she said.

Overnight parking is banned in parts of Waterloo on Friday and Saturday nights, the city said in a release Friday morning. There is no overnight on-street parking in the MacGregor Albert, Northdale or uptown neighbourhoods, bordered by Westmount Road, Columbia Street, Weber Street and Erb Street.

The Uptown Waterloo BIA posted a Google Map of bars and clubs spanning King Street, from Ethel’s Lounge to The Duke of Wellington.

More to come.
