The Roman Empire might've fallen, but it didn't take their numbers down with it.

Those pesky letters disguised as numbers still stick around to this day, normally wreaking havoc on people that just want to know what number Super Bowl we're up to.

It's all part of the NFL's effort to limit confusion. Despite this year's game being played in 2025, the winning team will be known as the 2024 champions. As a result, that's where the Roman numerals come in.

Providing a little more fancy look to the branding, they can be a little confusing to understand.

Here's your guide to the Super Bowl number and how to read roman numerals.

How to read Roman numerals

The letter "I" represents a single number. However, roman numerals are read left-to-right, meaning a one in front of a "V" would translate to four.

"L" stands for 50 and "C" stands for 100. While we're a ways away from getting to Super Bowl 100, it's not too late to start practicing.

Here's a basic guide on how to read Roman numerals:

  • I = 1
  • II = 2
  • III = 3
  • IV = 4
  • V = 5
  • VI = 6
  • VII = 7
  • VIII = 8
  • IX = 9
  • X = 10
  • L = 50
  • C = 100
