Will Kamaru Usman go 2-0 against Leon Edwards? The Sporting News will be providing updates and analysis on all things UFC 278.

Since losing to Kamaru Usman in 2015, Leon Edwards has become an elite contender at welterweight in the UFC. All these years later, he is ready to fight for welterweight gold against the man who beat him.

Edwards is challenging Usman for the title at UFC 278 on Saturday inside Vivint Arena in Salt Lake City,  

Edwards has gone 9-0 with one no-contest since the first Usman fight. His journey has been inspirational, and he can’t wait to make the most of this opportunity.

“I didn’t grow up dreaming of being the champion or anything like that, because I didn’t know anything about it,” Edwards told Yahoo Sports. "It was all about survival. If I can do this, though, it would mean the world to mean. It’s such an amazing story. I came from extremely humble beginnings in Jamaica and for most of my life, there was trouble everywhere I turned. And now, to be here with an opportunity to have that UFC belt put around my waist in a couple of days, that’s the kind of story they talk about in the movies. It’s amazing."

Usman has gone 13-0 since beating Edwards. He has successfully defended the welterweight title five times since winning it against Tyron Woodley, Usman has a chance to show the world why he is considered the pound-for-pound best fighter in MMA.

UFC 278 live results, highlights

The main card begins with a light heavyweight bout, as Tyson Pedro faces Harry Hunsucker.

10:15 p.m. ET: Following a late final prelim bout, UFC 278's main card has begun. 

10 p.m. ET: A below the belt shot landed from Tybura in round two. Romanov responded with a flurry of heavy shots. Tybura ended up on top and landed on Tybura's back. Romanov turned it around and landed big shots before the end of the round. Both squared off in round three but were tired. Tybura would end up winning via majority decision (29-28, 29-28 28-28). 

9:45p.m. ET: Heavyweights look to close the UFC 278 prelims as Marcin Tybura faces Alexander Romanov. Romanov with a quick takedown suplex. He landed a another big one that wowed the crowd. Romanov would not stop landing shots to the face of Romanov while on the floor. It appeared to be a 10-8 round. 

9:35 p.m. ET: Gordon landed a hook to the body and started working on the floor in round three. Santos landed a spinning back elbow before the round ended. Jared Gordon ended up winning via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27). 

9:15 p.m. ET: Jared Gordon comes out to "Edge of Seventeen" for his next fight against Leonardo Santos. Both started exchanging blows through the first two rounds, with no clear advantage between the two. 

9:10 p.m. ET: Following an uneventful round three the end results came in. In a weird fight, Saldana and Woodson fought to a draw (29-27 Woodson, 29-27 Saldana, 28-28). 

8:45 p.m. ET: In featherweight action, Sean Woodson vs. Luis Saldana is up next. A big check hook hurt Woodson, but Saldana didn't take advantage. he instead landed an illegal knee to the head of Woodson and lost one point. That might have been a rare 9-8 first round for Saldana. In the second round, Woodson almost landed the first Buggy Choke in UFC history.

8:25 p.m. ET: A.J. Fletcher vs. Ange Loosa starts off the main card. Fletcher looked gassed in round three after he controlled the second round. Loosa used his wrestling to smother Fletcher. The crowd was restless when the final round was going on. Loosa would end up winning via unanimous decision. 29-27, 29-28, 29-28.

8 p.m. ET: The prelims have started. Prior to the prelims, Victor Altamirano and Daniel Lacerda had a violent first round that saw Altamirano win via TKO. Aori Qileng defeated Jay Perrin via unanimous decision, and Amir Albazi submitted Francisco Figueiredo

  • Main event: 12:15 a.m. ET (approximate) 

UFC 278 takes place Saturday, Aug. 20. The Fight Pass prelims will begin around 6 p.m. ET. The prelims will go live at 8 p.m. ET and the main card will start at 10 p.m. ET on ESPN+ PPV. Usman and Edwards should make their way to the Octagon around 12:15 a.m. ET, depending on how long the undercard fights last.
