Two local restaurants shaking up Valentine's Day this Friday

Are you looking for something different this Valentine’s Day?

Two local restaurants are hosting unique events to celebrate – or in one case, poke fun at – the annual celebration of love.

The Dive Gastro Pub, at 648 Queen St. E, is hosting Singles Awareness Day (S.A.D. for short) on Friday night, which owner Blake Richards said is meant for single people “to hang out and meet up,” though couples are still welcome to attend.

Jay Taillifer will be playing live music, and the pub will also offer a Corona-rita – a successful marriage, for cocktails at least, between the Corona and margarita.

In a social media post, the pub poked fun at the holiday and invited the public to come out.

“Is your love life a small dumpster fire? Well, come join the party because you're in great company,” the post said. “Whether you're fresh out of a breakup, happily single, or stuck in a relationship that’s more ‘meh’ than ‘aww,’ this is the night for you.”

At Mane St. Cafe and Lounge, located at 626 Queen St. E, a drag show put on by The Bawating Babes will follow dinner.

Owner Krista Nolan said reservations are still available for the restaurant’s dinner for two in its “intimate” Arts and Social Lounge.

“You can also reserve a table for dinner prior to the Drag Show put on by The Bawating Babes in conjunction with Bon Soo and other sponsors,” Nolan said.

With a cash bar and photo booth, doors open at 8 p.m. with the show beginning at 9. The best dressed guests will have a chance to win a Valentine’s Day costume contest.
