Severe thunderstorm warning in effect for KFL&A region – Kingston ...

Environment Canada has placed much of the Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox and Addington (KFL&A) region under a severe thunderstorm warning, which extends to neighbouring regions.

The warning was issued just after 4 p.m., and notes that “Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking a severe thunderstorm capable of producing very strong wind gusts, pea to dime size hail and heavy rain.”

“This line of severe thunderstorms is located from Plevna to Myrehall, moving east at 65 km/h,” the warning continues, noting that wind gusts up to 90 km/h are possible.

“Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Remember, severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes,” Environment Canada states.

The following areas are included within the warning: Kingston, Napanee, Perth, Kaladar, Tamworth, Plevna, Puzzle Lake Provincial Park, Sharbot Lake Provincial Park, Odessa, Sharbot Lake, Sydenham, Silver Lake Provincial Park, Frontenac Provincial Park, Westport, Lanark, and Murphys Point Provincial Park.

“Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors!” Environment Canada states.

“Emergency Management Ontario recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.”

Environment Canada issues severe thunderstorm warnings when “imminent or occurring thunderstorms are likely to produce or are producing one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall,” according to the federal organization.
